Nuremberg Day Trips
Nuremberg is one of the best bases for exploring Franconia and northern Bavaria. Within an hour or two you'll find beautifully preserved medieval towns, UNESCO World Heritage cities, dramatic limestone landscapes, caves, castles and charming villages.
These are journeys I have personally taken from Nuremberg over many years — some by train, some combining trains with regional buses, and a few that work best with a rental car. Most trips are possible without a car, though some journeys become considerably easier with one.
Rather than generic sightseeing lists, these itineraries are based on my own travels throughout Franconia. The goal is to help you decide which excursion fits your interests and answer a simple question: if I have one day, what would I actually do?
Bamberg, Germany
A Day in Bamberg
One of Germany's most beautiful UNESCO World Heritage cities, known for its medieval streets, cathedral, Little Venice and famous breweries. Bamberg is less than an hour from Nuremberg and one of my most-recommended day trips in Franconia.

Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Germany
Rothenburg ob der Tauber
Germany's most famous medieval town with complete city walls, towers and wonderfully preserved streets. Despite its popularity, Rothenburg remains one of Europe's finest surviving medieval towns and is absolutely worth the journey.

Franconian Switzerland, Germany
Fränkische Schweiz
A scenic escape into Franconia's limestone hills, caves, forests and charming villages. Pottenstein and Teufelshöhle are among the highlights of a region that feels surprisingly rural considering how close it is to Nuremberg.

Fürth, Germany
A Half Day in Fürth
A relaxed half-day excursion to Nuremberg's smaller neighbor, featuring a charming historic center, Gustavstraße and the famous Michaelis-Kirchweih in autumn. Fürth feels quieter, more local and less focused on tourism.

Regensburg, Germany
A Day in Regensburg
One of Germany's finest medieval cities, Regensburg combines nearly 2,000 years of history with one of Europe's best-preserved old towns. Roman heritage, Gothic architecture, the Stone Bridge and the Danube River create a completely different atmosphere from nearby Nuremberg.

Munich, Germany
A Day in Munich
Although Munich deserves several days of its own, the excellent ICE connection from Nuremberg makes a one-day visit surprisingly practical. In a single day it's possible to experience Marienplatz, Viktualienmarkt, the English Garden and several of Munich's most famous landmarks.

How Close Is Everything?
All destinations are within 1–2 hours of Nuremberg by train or public transport.
Before You Go
Planning Tips
Purchase a Bayern Ticket for regional train travel — it covers most connections except ICE trains.
ICE trains to Regensburg and Munich are not covered by the Bayern Ticket. Check DB prices in advance.
Always check regional bus schedules before visiting the Fränkische Schweiz — buses don't always run frequently.
Wear comfortable walking shoes. Nearly all these destinations have cobblestone streets.
During the Christmas season, book accommodation early — Nuremberg's Christkindlesmarkt draws large crowds.
