Munich Day Trips
Munich is one of Europe's best bases for exploring southern Germany and beyond. Within two hours, you can find yourself standing on Germany's highest mountain, wandering medieval streets that have changed little for centuries, cycling around crystal-clear alpine lakes, or crossing into Austria for a day in Salzburg.
Many of these journeys are places I've returned to time and again over the years. Some are childhood memories, others became favorite weekend escapes while spending summers in Bavaria. Rather than simply listing attractions, these guides follow the routes I personally enjoy taking, including practical transportation tips, favorite viewpoints, cafés and restaurants, and little experiences that have made each journey memorable.

Munich to Salzburg
One of Europe's most beautiful small cities, Salzburg combines baroque architecture, Mozart's legacy and spectacular mountain scenery into a day trip that feels far more substantial than the short journey from Munich suggests.

Munich to Lake Starnberg
This is one of my favorite active day trips from Munich. Bring your bicycle on the train and ride roughly 50 km around Lake Starnberg, passing grand lakeside villas, quiet beaches, monasteries and beautiful alpine scenery.

Munich to Regensburg
Regensburg is one of Germany's best-preserved medieval cities and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Walking through its narrow lanes, historic squares and along the Danube feels like stepping back in time.

Munich to Garmisch & the Zugspitze

Munich to Chiemsee
Known as the Bavarian Sea, Lake Chiemsee makes for a wonderful combination of lake scenery, boat rides and royal history. Ride the historic Chiemsee Railway to the ferry, visit King Ludwig II's magnificent Herrenchiemsee Palace, then continue to the peaceful Fraueninsel.
