If the weather is clear, few day trips from Munich can match this one. Ride the historic cogwheel railway into the Alps before ascending Germany's highest mountain, then descend to the turquoise waters of the Eibsee.
Why I Recommend This Journey
The journey from Munich to Garmisch-Partenkirchen is one of the most dramatic train rides in Germany. As you leave the city, the landscape changes completely — flat Bavarian countryside gives way to foothills, then suddenly the Alps appear ahead of you, filling the entire horizon. The Zugspitze ascent is genuinely spectacular, and the Eibsee below is one of the most beautiful mountain lakes I've seen anywhere in Europe.
Getting There
Direct trains run from Munich Hauptbahnhof to Garmisch-Partenkirchen, with the journey taking around 1 hour 30 minutes. From Garmisch station, the Zugspitzbahn cogwheel railway departs for the summit. The Eibsee Cable Car provides an alternative descent route. Buy a combined ticket for the cogwheel railway up and cable car down for the best experience.
Suggested Itinerary
Morning
Take the early train from Munich to arrive in Garmisch-Partenkirchen before 9am. Board the Zugspitzbahn cogwheel railway from Garmisch station — the journey through the mountains is spectacular in itself.
Late Morning
Arrive at the Zugspitze summit (2,962m). On a clear day the views extend across four countries. Visit the summit cross, explore the glacier, and have coffee at the summit restaurant.
Lunch
Lunch at the summit restaurant with panoramic Alpine views. The food is straightforward but the setting is extraordinary.
Afternoon
Descend by the Eibsee Cable Car to the Eibsee, a stunning turquoise mountain lake at the foot of the Zugspitze. Walk around part of the lake or simply sit and enjoy the scenery.
Late Afternoon
Return to Garmisch-Partenkirchen by bus or taxi. Walk through the town center and explore the Partnach Gorge if time allows — a dramatic limestone gorge a short walk from the town.
My Favorite Moments
Standing at the Zugspitze summit cross on a clear morning, looking south into Austria and Italy, north across the Bavarian plain towards Munich. The scale of the view is humbling — you can see for hundreds of kilometers in every direction. It's one of those moments that makes you feel very small in the best possible way.
Food & Drink
The summit restaurant on the Zugspitze is the obvious choice for lunch — the food is good and the setting is unmatched. Back in Garmisch, KRÖNNER is an excellent café for coffee and cake. For dinner before the train home, Gasthof Fraundorfer on Ludwigstrasse is a classic Bavarian inn with live folk music most evenings.
Practical Tips
- Check the weather forecast carefully before going — the summit is often in cloud and the views are the main reason to visit
- Book Zugspitze tickets in advance in summer — queues can be very long
- Bring warm layers even in summer — the summit temperature is typically 10–15°C colder than the valley
- The Partnach Gorge requires a short walk from Garmisch — allow 1.5 hours for the full circuit
- The Bayern Ticket covers the train to Garmisch but not the Zugspitze railway — that requires a separate ticket
