Salzburg is one of those rare cities that rewards visitors immediately. The moment you cross the Salzach River and look up at Hohensalzburg Fortress rising above the old town, you understand why this city has captivated travelers for centuries. The compact historic center means you can cover the main sights comfortably on foot, yet there's enough depth here to fill several visits. I've returned many times and still find new corners to explore.

Getting There

Direct trains run frequently from Munich Hauptbahnhof to Salzburg Hauptbahnhof, with the journey taking around 1 hour 30 minutes. Both Meridian regional trains and OBB services operate this route. Book in advance for the best fares, or use a Bayern Ticket for regional trains if you're traveling as a group.

Suggested Itinerary

1. Morning

   Arrive and walk directly to Getreidegasse, Mozart's birthplace and the heart of the old town. Explore the narrow lanes and courtyards of the Altstadt before the crowds build.

2. Late Morning

   Ride the Festungsbahn funicular up to Hohensalzburg Fortress for panoramic views over the city and surrounding Alps. Allow at least an hour to explore the fortress interior.

3. Lunch

   Return to the old town for lunch. The Augustiner Bräustübl is a short walk away and one of the finest beer halls in Austria — a vast, atmospheric space with excellent food.

4. Afternoon

   Cross the Salzach River to Mirabell Gardens and Palace. The formal gardens are particularly beautiful in summer. Then visit the Residenz and Salzburg Cathedral before exploring the Domplatz.

5. Late Afternoon

   Take a short taxi or bus ride to Schloss Hellbrunn, the 17th-century pleasure palace famous for its trick fountains. Allow 1–2 hours here before heading back to the station.

My Favorite Moments

My favorite moment in Salzburg is always the first view of the fortress from the Staatsbrücke bridge early in the morning, before the tour groups arrive. The light is usually perfect, the streets are quiet, and the city feels entirely yours for a brief, wonderful hour.

Food & Drink

Salzburg has excellent food. For a traditional Austrian lunch, the Augustiner Bräustübl is unmissable — a vast beer hall where you collect your food from market stalls and find a table in the garden or vaulted halls. For coffee and cake, Café Tomaselli on the Alter Markt is one of Austria's oldest coffee houses and worth a stop. In the evening before your train, try Zum Eulenspiegel for traditional Austrian cuisine in a beautiful old building.
