Why I Recommend This Journey

Chiemsee is one of those places that feels genuinely special rather than simply picturesque. The combination of the lake, the islands, the palace and the monastery creates a day that feels varied and unhurried. Herrenchiemsee Palace is Ludwig II's most ambitious project — a Bavarian Versailles built on an island in the middle of a lake — and it's extraordinary. The Fraueninsel, with its ancient Benedictine monastery and tiny fishing village, provides a completely different atmosphere just a short ferry ride away.

Getting There

Direct trains run from Munich Hauptbahnhof to Prien am Chiemsee in around 1 hour. From Prien station, the historic Chiemsee-Bahn steam railway (running in summer) or a short walk takes you to the ferry pier. Ferries run regularly to both the Herreninsel (for the palace) and the Fraueninsel throughout the day.

Suggested Itinerary

1. Morning

   Arrive in Prien and take the Chiemsee-Bahn steam railway (or walk) to the ferry pier. Board the ferry to the Herreninsel and walk through the forest to Herrenchiemsee Palace.

2. Late Morning

   Tour Herrenchiemsee Palace, King Ludwig II's unfinished tribute to Versailles. The Hall of Mirrors is extraordinary — longer than the original at Versailles. Allow at least 1.5 hours for the palace and gardens.

3. Lunch

   Return to the ferry pier and take the boat to the Fraueninsel. Have lunch at one of the island's small restaurants or the monastery café, with views across the lake.

4. Afternoon

   Explore the Fraueninsel on foot — it takes about 20 minutes to walk around the entire island. Visit the Benedictine monastery, which has been continuously occupied since the 8th century. Browse the small shops selling monastery products.

5. Late Afternoon

   Take the ferry back to Prien and catch your train to Munich. If time allows, walk along the lakeside promenade in Prien before departing.

My Favorite Moments

Standing in the Hall of Mirrors at Herrenchiemsee Palace on a quiet morning, when the light comes through the windows and the chandeliers are lit. Ludwig II never completed the palace and spent only a few nights here, which gives it a melancholy grandeur that the original Versailles lacks. It's one of the most atmospheric rooms in Bavaria.

Food & Drink

The monastery café on the Fraueninsel serves simple, excellent food — soups, bread, cheese and the monastery's own liqueurs. For a more substantial meal, the Inselwirt on the Fraueninsel is a traditional Bavarian restaurant with a beautiful terrace overlooking the lake. In Prien itself, the Alter Wirt is a good choice for dinner before the train home.
